( Senator of State) Brig. Gen. Martin Witherspoon Gary

Son of Dr. Thomas Reeder Gary V and Mary Ann Porter. He had 9 siblings. They were Colonel Summerfield M. G. Gary ( born October 10th, 1826), Elizabeth Gary ( born January 5th, 1828), Dr. Franklin Fincher Gary ( born November 4th, 1829), Dr. Thomas Porter Gary ( born April 10th, 1835), Ann Victoria Gary ( born October 31st, 1836), Captain John Hillary Gary ( born August 17th, 1838), Judge William Theodore Gary ( born October 16th, 1841), Atlanta F. Gary ( born March 17th, 1846), and Luella P. Gary ( born July 13th, 1848).

Born on March 10th, 1831 in Cokesbury, South Carlina. His late home is in Edgefield, South Carolina named Oakley Park. After his death on April 9th, 1881, the Daughters of the Confederacy has owned it ( see " Oakley Park").

He was a member of the " Red Shirts" and the " Biscuit Rebellion", and president of the Bar.
He was founded as " The Bald Eagle of Edgefield, SC".

He was also elected member of the House of Representatives for state. He has fought and commanded in Gettysburg, Hampton's Legion, 1st & 2nd Mannassas, 2 Bull Run, Pickett's Charge, etc.

On April 9th, in 1881 he died in his home unmarried. His father Thomas Reeder Gary was born on May 25th, 1802 and died March 19th, 1852. Thomas Reeder Gary's father and mother was Jesse Gary and Mary Reeder. Jesse Gary's father and mother was Thomas and Rebecca Jones Gary.



He is now buried in Tabernacle Cemetary on Bush River in Newberry, Greenwood County which is also called now the Gary Family Cemetary.
